IEEE has announced that the IEEE Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation with the Electric Power System (EPS), and End-Use Applications and Loads, (IEEE P2030) is close to a sponsor ballot, which is an important milestone toward ratification as a standard.
IEEE P2030 is being developed for use by the power engineering, communications and information technology industries as a foundational, cross-discipline, system-of-systems guide for Smart Grid interoperability. IEEE is the first standards development organization to address Smart Grid interoperability.
Dick DeBlasio, the IEEE P2030 Working Group chair says, “This week’s IEEE P2030 Working Group meeting will be critical in terms of arriving at a ballot-ready draft guide by March 2011, which was our original target when the working group formed in March 2009. We remain on track to publish IEEE P2030 in 2011.”
DeBlasio is also IEEE’s Smart Grid liaison to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the chief engineer at the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) facility of the United States Department of Energy. He also notes, “Ultimately, the guide will be a kind of Rosetta stone that will help engineers decipher the end-to-end interface requirements toward achieving an interoperable Smart Grid. It will serve as a design tool and knowledge base, helping companies leap forward in their understanding of how and where to develop Smart Grid systems and applications. Plus, it will illuminate where additional standards are needed to help keep the Smart Grid moving forward.”
To that end, the IEEE Standards Association recently approved a project authorization request to start work on IEEE P2030.3, the Standard for Test Procedures for Electric Energy Storage Equipment and Systems for Electric Power Systems Applications, which will accommodate electric storage in relation to renewable energy sources. The IEEE P2030.3 Working Group is chaired by IEEE Moving Ahead on New Standards, senior engineer at China Electric Power Research Institute of State Grid Corporation of China.
