Smart Grid News

Green Charge Networks (GCN) has selected battery manufacturer Saft as a partner in a $92 million smart grid demonstration project that is being led by New York’s Consolidated Edison. The multi-year project is designed to identify, develop, and test new technologies within the electric delivery system that will facilitate a more efficient grid, the integration of smart grid architecture, and measure the effects of widespread electric vehicle adoption on the electric grid.

The University at Buffalo (UB) and Buffalo State College will improve green jobs training for undergraduate and graduate students as part of a federally funded program to transform the electrical grid into a smart grid.

Itron is partnering with National Grid to build and evaluate an advanced smart grid in Massachusetts that uses a new generation of standards-based network technology. The two companies will field test the multi-application capabilities of the new Itron-Cisco IPv6 based smart grid solution, including advanced metering, home area networking (HAN), and distribution automation (DA).

February’s IEEE smart grid Newsletter reports that the University of Minnesota is planning  to build a sustainable community with a smart grid overlay and is also working on technology that could lead to the realization of an automated, energy-efficient smart home.

Open Access Technology International (OATI) has acquired two contiguous parcels in Bloomington to house the new OATI South Campus, a new office complex and Data Center.
The nearly four-acre South Campus location is scheduled to include a data center, office space, meeting suites, and will showcase OATI smart grid solutions as well as other OATI products and services.

A123 Systems will supply six Grid Battery Systems (GBS) to Northern Powergrid, which provides power to nearly four million customers in the U.K. The GBSs will be designed for peak-load shifting and to manage fluctuations in voltage on the U.K.’s power grid. The systems will be deployed as part of the Customer-Led Network Revolution (CLNR), the U.K.’s largest smart grid project funded through the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets’ (Ofgem) Low Carbon Networks Fund. The system is expected to be operational by the end of 2012.

The California Energy Commission has awarded $1,983,355 for two research projects. The University of California at Los Angeles will receive $1.9 million to develop the California Center for Sustainable Communities that will study the potential energy savings that can result from improved community design, integrated land use, and transportation practices.

Synaptitude Consulting has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) to promote the use of open geospatial standards in smart grid software and services to enable smart grid stakeholders to make the best possible use of the smart grid’s ubiquitous location information.
