After falling out of favor, nuclear energy is making a strong comeback in Europe. According to a Nuclear Power Europe survey, every industry expert polled agreed that Europe is embracing a nuclear energy renaissance.
There are currently 19 nuclear power plants under construction in six European countries. Recently, the Italian government overturned a public referendum banning nuclear power that had been in place for twenty years. The survey, which targeted experts from global utilities and energy firms, found widespread enthusiasm, with more than 63 percent of participants predicting growth for the European nuclear sector in the coming year.
Tim Probert, conference director at Nuclear Power Europe 2011, says, “There has been a clear shift in opinion in favour of nuclear energy in key European markets. In the last year alone we have seen a commitment to developing and cultivating nuclear power around the world, and no more so than in Europe. It is no coincidence that this has occurred during a time that has seen public support grow amidst concerns over climate change and the reliability of foreign energy supplies. In a year that has seen Italy make a dramatic u-turn on nuclear policy, we could see a trend emerge throughout Europe whereby several countries will review their long-standing positions on nuclear power. Our survey underlines the emerging paradigm, and is the clearest indication that Europe’s nuclear renaissance is much more than media hype.”
Nuclear Power Europe 2011 will be held June 7-9 at Fiera Milano City in Milan. The conference features Europe’s leading renewable and nuclear energy exhibitions, POWER-GEN Europe 2011, and Renewable Energy World Europe 2011. There will also be an extensive conference program to discuss a wide range of industry issues.
POWER-GEN Europe, Renewable Energy World Europe, and Nuclear Power Europe are owned and organized by PennWell Corporation. The conferences address topical issues critical to the development of power generation in the host region. For more information, visit www.powergeneurope.com
