The NES smart grid solution allows for a feature rich and highly scalable system of smart meters that are accessible over the Internet. Utilities around the world are using Echelon’s solutions. Installations exist in more than 10 countries worldwide.
SEAS-NVE provides energy to more than 400,000 customers in Denmark. The utility is set up as a cooperative which means all customers are also associates of the company outside of the municipal power grids located in 6 Danish cities. The 375,000 stakeholders in the utility have the unique opportunity to shape the future of the utility.
“Denmark is well known for embracing technology to promote energy efficiency,” said Peter Iversen, chief technology officer at SEAS-NVE. “Denmark is the world leading producer of wind energy and now we’re building a truly smart grid to better use and conserve energy and provide new services for our customers.”
“Our smart grid project utilizes the top technologies worldwide, including Echelon’s NES System, to serve today’s needs and Denmark’s future needs from electric car charging to automated demand response programs and time of use tariffs all while improving customer service,” Iversen continued.
“We’ve won multiple smart grid deployments in the Nordic region with Echelon’s feature-rich NES software and smart meters, making Echelon’s NES system the smart grid solution of choice in the region,” said Sonny Nielsen, chief executive officer of Eltel Networks A/S Denmark. Eltel is deploying the smart grid for SEAS-NVE.
“The NES system offers utilities a highly scalable, future proof solution that increases customer service and energy conservation programs, and reduces overall operating costs,” Nielsen continued. “We are confident that we’re offering utilities the best solution available when we propose the NES system.”
“We are excited about this significant milestone for SEAS-NVE and Denmark,” said Michael Anderson, senior vice president of NES sales and marketing development at Echelon. “We look forward to a new era of energy awareness and efficiency led by forward-thinking utilities like SEAS-NVE.”
“Moreover, we’re excited by the potential growth in the smart grid market in the coming year,” Anderson continued. “We believe utilities will choose our NES solution because it is extremely accurate and reliable and they can be confident that they are making the best long term decision about the core control networking infrastructure for their smart grid.”
The NES system allows for utilities to inject intelligence into existing infrastructure and allows for new technologies to be added and flexibility for response to new regulatory requirements. The NES system is really a complete smart grid infrastructure and not just smart meters. Panasonic Europe, for one, recently announced that it would launch a pilot smart energy management system in partnership with SEAS-NVE.
Panasonic announced at the end of 2009 that it would deploy its Lifinity Home Energy Management System in Denmark. The system is based around a central control system installed in the home that grants efficient and secure control over networked energy devices to customers.
