Arcadian Networks, a developer of wireless broadband communications systems for the energy industry, announced the availability of its new smart grid gateway on March 3. The AE20r is a second generation router/gateway that incorporates a variety of technologies with many helpful applications and smart devices.
Real time, bi-directional communications are the building blocks for all smart grid solutions. Arcadian Networks offers customized services to the energy, oil and gas, and renewable energy industries including network deployment, systems integration, and customer service.
Utilizing the Ae20r energy providers can gather information in real time from just about any supported platform. Utilities are then able to realize the full benefits of smart grid technologies and can monitor and manage their assets in ways that was impossible before.
This newest release from Arcadian Networks builds upon the company’s previous gateway but now supports the WiMAX communications protocol. WiMAX is a high-speed communications methodology that shows promise within the smart meter realm for telecommunications companies.
Arcadian also has a specially licensed 700 MHz spectrum that which, combined with the WiMAX interface, allows utilities to maximize the wide coverage, reliability, and secure environment of the licensed spectrum with the enhanced capacity and superfluity that WiMAX provides.
The AE20r designed with the energy industry in mind and is built around Internet Protocol and open standards. The licensed spectrum provides a high level of wireless security for sensitive communications that are necessary throughout the electric grid.
Arcadian’s gateways are a cost effective solution for utilities seeking to provide connectivity throughout a large smart meter deployment. Communications transmitted from high value endpoints is achieved seamlessly. Other supported protocols include Wi-Fi, the 3G and 4G mobile phone networks, Ethernet, the 900 MHz industrial radio spectrum, and serial and USB connections.
“The design of the AE20r is modular and open, to accommodate the complex requirements of our customers,” said Arnon Afgin, vice president of research and development at Arcadian Networks. “Not only can the AE20r collapse multiple network technologies into a single compact and converged platform, but our router can also be utilized for both fixed deployments as well as low cost rugged mobile deployments of the field force.”
The AE20r is compliant with the ISO9001:2000 platform to ensure interoperability with third party vendors. Widely accepted standards allow for network management and control systems to be easily integrated.
“Through our AE20r, Arcadian can now offer a unique blend of technologies that meet the coverage and capacity needs of our customers,” explained Jake Rasweiler, vice president of information technology, engineering, and networking. “However, building a smart grid goes beyond boxes, technologies, and spectrum.”
“Arcadian believes that an enterprise approach is inextricably linked to the smart grid,” Rasweiler continued. “Only by applying Arcadian’s SMART network methodology that combines our customers existing resources with our licensed spectrum and the desired applications can a cost effective, territory wide smart grid be achieved.”
