Bloom Energy, a developer of unique on-site power generations based upon cutting edge fuel cell technology, announced on February 24 that it has signed up several big name customers for its Bloom Energy Server.  Bloom Energy Corporation, based in California’s Silicon Valley, is focused on developing solutions that will transform the way people generate and consume energy.

The energy server is built around patented solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology that generates cleaner, more stable and more cost-effective energy than what is currently available from other energy providers.  Among Bloom Energy’s first customers are Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Google, and Wal-Mart – all giants in their respective industries.

Customers are able to efficiently generate their own clean power on site using the Bloom Energy Server – effectively reducing energy costs, minimizing outages, and reducing carbon emissions as well.  Each unit is able to provide 100 kilowatts of electricity, an amount adequate for the needs of 100 private homes or a small office building.

Customers can expect to recoup their equipment investments within 3 to 5 years as a result of the savings in energy costs.  Collectively, Bloom Energy Servers have generated more than 11 million kilowatt hours of electricity since they first came into operation in July of 2008 – an amount equal to the yearly requirements of 1,000 homes.  As a result some 14 million pounds of CO2 have been saved as well – an amount equal to planting one million trees.

Bank of America, one of the first Bloom Energy customers, has long been an environmental leader within its sector.  The banking giant has committed to put $20 billion towards addressing climate change within its own operations.  As part of the effort the company desired to reduce its electrical needs while shoring up the stability of its power supply and reducing its dependence on the national power grid.

Bloom Energy was able to fulfill Bank of America’s wishes and was able to do away with the bank’s reliance on diesel generators.  The bank has energy servers that provide 500 kilowatts of clean energy at a large call center in southern California.

“Installing low carbon technologies, like Bloom’s Energy Servers, at our facilities is not only the right thing to do for our planet, but it’s also a smart business decision,” said Mark Nicholls, senior vice president and corporate workplace executive at Bank of America.  “Bank of America is proud to be at the forefront as one of Bloom’s foundation customers.”

Coca-cola is another industry giant where protecting the environment is an important focus.  Coca-cola also has a 500 kilowatt Bloom Energy installation at its plant in Dinuba, California.  Coke expects to provide 30 percent of the plants needs through bio-gas – effectively reducing its carbon output by 35 percent.

“This new fuel cell technology has great promise and represents an important step for Coca-Cola in continuing to grow our business without growing the carbon footprint,” said Brian Kelley, president and general manager of Still Beverages and Supply Chain at Coca-Cola North America.

“Whether a customer wants to reduce its carbon footprint or its energy bills, or both, the Bloom Energy Server provides the solution,” said Dr. KR Sridhar, principal co-founder and chief executive officer of Bloom Energy.  “Our foundation customers are industry leaders in their businesses as well as in environmental sustainability, representing companies who understand that responsible energy consumption and healthy profit margins need not be mutually exclusive.”

“We are fortunate to have foundation customers who embrace energy innovation as an important part of their overall business strategy,” Sridhar continued.
