Italian utility Enel has partnered with Spain’s Endesa to create Meters and More Looks to Create Global Standards, a non-profit association formed to promote the deployment of Smart Meters and achieve standard pan-European Smart Metering solutions. Later this year Endesa will begin installing new meters for all its 13 million customers using the Meters and More protocol, which allows for bidirectional data transfer between smart meters and central billing systems in an advanced SmartMeter environment.

Livio Gallo, Head of Enel Distribution, called Meters and More an important step in achieving the global smart grid. “I am really proud to announce the extension of Enel’s Meters and More communication protocol to other international utilities, which are invited to join the Association. Thanks to Meters and More, global advanced metering solutions will be made available across Europe.”

Endsea’s General Director of Distribution, José Luìs Marín López-Otero, added, “The Meters and More Association, open to all international partners, will enable the implementation of smart grid solutions as well as promoting the creation of a reliable and cost-efficient standard, which will be applied to millions of meters worldwide”

In 2001, Enel invested two billion Euros to replace traditional electromechanical meters with new modern electronic devices managed by the Automatic Meter Management Solution. The project was completed in 2006 and established Enel as a world leader in smart grid technology and operations. Currently Enel has installed more Smart Meters than any other utility and the company’s Telegestore AMM solution is used by over 32 million customers worldwide.

Through Meters and More, Enel and Endesa is making technology available to other projects such as the Open and Public Extended Network (OPEN) meter project, a four million Euro initiative with the objective of defining and developing open standard telecommunication protocols and data formats for smart metering.
