Last year broke a lot of records for Ember, a primary developer of wireless mesh networking technology built around the ZigBee protocol. In 2009 Ember released a number of products and posted record revenues. New funding for the company was also plentiful. The new year looks to be promising as well. Last year Ember’s revenues jumped some 27 percent and the last quarter posted the highest revenues the company has ever seen. Ember has even more contracts to fulfill in the first quarter of 2010 and looks to quickly ramp up production.
Large smart meter installation projects, widely seen as an essential “first step” towards the smart grid of the future, were a big source of new business for Ember. Solutions at the company are developed to allow for the necessary reliability, security and scalability for smart grid deployments.
The ZigBee wireless platform - which includes chipsets, supporting software, and development tools – dramatically simplifies the processes involved with integrating embedded software, networking and RF (radio frequency). Low-power wireless smart grid products, home area networks, remote monitoring and control applications can all be built around ZigBee. Since ZigBee first became available Ember has developed cutting-edge solutions that allow for future developments to be easily integrated as they become available.
Ember released its 3rd generation ZigBee chipset in 2009 and it has the best wireless networking performance and code density in a low-power chip family. Also last year, Ember released its 4th generation software that supports critical smart grid features.
Venture capital investments topped $8 million for Ember last year, bringing the total amount raised to $89 million. Coupled with $5 million in debt refinancing Ember was able to position itself for strong growth in 2010 and well into the future. New sales channels have also been secured in Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, India, and New Zealand. These markets are emerging as strong smart energy markets for the future.
Two additions were also made to the company’s board of directors in 2009 from the energy and networking industries. Jacob Worenklein, the former chief executive officer at US Power Generating Company, and Mohamad Ali, the senior vice president of corporate development at Avaya were added.
Adding to this list of accomplishments are three awards that Ember won last year: Leading Green Technology Innovator, GoingGreen East 50 Top Private Company, and “Best Of” in the MITX Technology Awards for the company’s impact on the smart energy industry.
“The success of 2009 and the very bright outlook for 2010 has clearly established Ember as the definitive world leader in ZigBee networking technology especially in smart energy applications,” said Bob LeFort, chief executive officer at Ember. “This is the most exciting time to be in our kind of business – broad deployments of pioneering technology that will help utilities, consumers and society solve critical energy-related problems around the world.”
