Panasonic Europe has announced that it will collaborate with Denmark’s largest consumer-owned energy company in a new pilot smart energy product. Panasonic’s Lifinity Home Energy Management System (HEMS) will be combined with the utility’s smart grid system.SEAS-NVE provides energy to more than 400,000 customers in Denmark. Since the utility is a cooperative, all customers are also associates of the company except for the municipal networks in 6 Danish cities. The 375,000 shareholders have the unique opportunity to shape the future of the utility.
Panasonic Europe claims the new smart energy management system “will pave the way for the eco-homes of the future in Europe” and will allow for management of home appliances, heating, and lighting. Lifinity is based around a central control system in the home that gives energy consumers secure and energy-efficient control over their networked electrical devices.
“This European collaboration represents the first step towards deploying the Panasonic Energy Management System on a broad scale,” said Laurent Abadie, chief executive officer of Panasonic Europe. “The Panasonic Energy Management System incorporates our latest technologies to save, create and store energy in the home and reduce harmful emissions.”
“Combined with [SEAS-NVE’s] smart grid, our smart management of home energy consumption will help realize a greener lifestyle without intruding on day-to-day lifestyles,” Abadie continued.
Lifinity was developed by Panasonic Electric Works to help homeowners save energy by providing a visual representation of how energy is being consumed through a connection with a smart meter. The system allows the consumer to control appliances, heating and lighting locally through the display unit or remotely over the Internet or through a smart phone. Networked sensors and devices work in conjunction with the core HEMS technology to constantly improve energy efficiency in the home without losing comfort.
“Lifinity HEMS will give future energy consumers full control of their electricity and heat consumption,” said Thomas Mikkelsen, head of marketing at SEAS-NVE. “The system also connects directly to their smart phones, making it possible to switch home appliances on and off remotely.”
“Panasonic have long been pioneers in environmentally-friendly home technology and we are looking forward to this cooperation and the great opportunities it will provide for our customers,” Mikkelsen continued.
The smart grid at SEAS-NVE is built upon Echelon’s IP-based integrated smart meter system and can be accessed through Web services. The system allows for multiple smart meters to share a single IP connection. New smart meter technologies can be easily integrated into the system as they become available in the future.
The eco-homes will first go through two test phases before it is deployed across SEAS-NVE’s service territory.
