Following an extensive bidding process, Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) has announced its partners for the utility’s Positive Energy smart grid project. A deployment will begin in Norman, Oklahoma in 2010.OG&E’s smart grid will streamline operations at the utility and will provide its customers with the information they need to better manage how they consume energy. Smart grid technology will help OG&E keep electricity prices down while increasing the reliability of its energy supply.
Corix Utilities will manage the installation of GE smart meters for all residential customers and a majority of the businesses in Norman. The smart meters will be installed over a 3 month period beginning in March of next year. Corix will also install smart meters for OG&E when the utility expands the project across its service territory.
The smart meters will transmit energy usage data over a secure wireless network back to OG&E for billing and servicing. The devices can also function as communications gateways in the home for other devices - including smart appliances.
EnergyICT, a subsidiary of the Elster Group, will provide its meter data management solution (MDMS) that will manage all smart meter data including billing rates, validation, estimation, interfacing with third-party systems, and other functions.
Comverge will provide marketing support for OG&E as it recruits up to 3,000 customers in Norman to participate in its time-of-use pricing program. OG&E wants to have these customers enrolled by May 1, 2010. Participants will get energy pricing and consumption data in near-real time. Comverge will also manage the installation of smart devices for the pilot project and will provide technical support for participants.
Silver Spring will provide the all-encompassing home area networking and demand response solution for the effort. CustomerIQ, is Silver Spring’s new Web portal and will provide detailed information for customers enrolled in the Norman project. CustomerIQ was formerly known as Greenbox, the company that provided a portal for OG&E’s initial smart grid study in the summer of last year.
Finally, Global Energy Partners will be charged with the verification of the results from the Norman project. The results of the study will determine what direction OG&E takes Positive Energy in the future.
“By partnering with some of the industry’s best in smart grid technology, we are building an integrated solution that will benefit our customers, our employees, and our shareowners,” said Ken Grant, managing director of OG&E’s smart grid project. “Now we’ve moved into high gear for deployment of distribution automation, AMI, smart meter delivery and installation, and customer demand response recruitment in Norman between January and June of next year.”
OG&E was one of 100 entities that received a stimulus grant from the Department of Energy for smart grid development. The utility’s $130 million grant could be used to significantly cover the cost of a smart grid installation across OG&E’s service territory in Oklahoma and western Arkansas where it provides electricity for more than 775,000 customers.
