Smart grid developer Trilliant announced on August 24 that it will integrate its technology with IBM’s WebSphere and Tivoli software products. Trilliant has developed smart grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency by streamlining utility operations and integrating renewable power sources into the energy supply. The result will be a product offering for utility companies that will allow them to securely expand their smart grid efforts. The terms of the new agreement call for WebSphere and Tivoli to be included within Trilliant’s UnitySuite software suite. The pair will also collaborate to develop solutions for the global energy market and standards for the entire smart grid industry.Trilliant now has a solution available that is backed by IBM while IBM gains inroads to the more than 200 utility companies that Trilliant counts as customers.
“IBM is delighted to add Trilliant to its extensive portfolio of smart grid solutions,” said Guido Bartels, general manager of IBM’s Global Energy & Utilities unit. “By taking this step forward in our relationship and integrating their products and services, we can offer improved performance, security, and scalability to our utility customers worldwide. This combined offering sets a high standard for enterprise integration and management of advanced smart grid networks.”
IBM put up $2 billion in May to help smart grid start-up companies develop and market their products – a sum equal to half the amount earmarked for smart grid projects by the federal government. Big Blue provided low-rate loans and lines of credit that made the start-up firms much more appealing to the smart grid funding made available by the US Department of Energy (DOE).
The industry-proven capabilities of IBM’s WebSphere Application Server will enhance the scalability, security, fault tolerance, and performance of Trilliant’s smart grid management software. The Enterprise Service Bus capabilities developed by IBM will simplify the process of integrating a smart grid network into a utility’s enterprise system.
Also included within WebSphere is the ability to integrate with more than 100 other enterprise software solutions, including SAP. Enterprise-grade solutions allow for seamless smart grid integration for even the largest utility companies.
The inclusion of Tivoli within Trilliant’s product offering allows for a robust smart grid management solution complete with an enterprise dashboard, and automated diagnosis of the entire system. If a potential problem is detected, the proper personnel are automatically notified by the system. Utility companies gain a high degree of visibility into the power grid that was impossible before.
The entire platform was developed using industry-accepted protocols and standards and allows for a high degree of functionality at the enterprise level without any customization or advanced programming.
“With the largest smart grid field deployment in the industry [more than a million devices], Trilliant appreciates the need to use the best solutions available to solve the challenge of enterprise system deployment and integration,” said Andy White, president and chief executive officer of Trilliant. “IBM’s technology and enterprise system experience are unmatched in this area and we can think of no better partner with whom to work.”
