Trilliant Incorporated announced on February 3 that it had installed more than a million devices that will one day form a comprehensive energy Internet. Trilliant is a global leader in delivering smart grid solutions that promote energy efficiency through efficient utility operations while integrating renewable resources that will dramatically reduce the levels of carbon emissions present in the atmosphere.Trilliant made the announcement at the DistribuTECH conference where the company is currently demonstrating its technology. DistribuTECH is an annual event highlighting the latest in automation and control systems, transmission and distribution engineering, power delivery equipment, and water utility technology. The event is currently in its 18th year and is being held in San Diego, California.
"We’re very proud of this milestone, and are already hard at work on the next million," said Bill Vogel, CEO of Trilliant. "Every intelligent grid and consumer device means better efficiency in aggregate as utilities and consumers alike have more control over energy usage and operations. As a result, our society is better prepared to manage resources and reduce carbon emissions."
The number of smart devices delivered by Trilliant demonstrates the dramatic growth of the smart grid recently. However, it is essential that other technologies geared towards customers are also introduced to realise the full potential of a smart grid rollout.
Trilliant also has expertise in providing complete consumer solutions. At one utility, a time-of-use and critical peak pricing program has been implemented that works in conjunction with smart meters and smart thermostats that are capable of responding to demand response signals. Information displays tied into the smart meter keep the consumer informed on real-time energy consumption and price.
The solution shares information both ways between consumer and utility and demonstrates the power of a true smart grid. The project has proven that Trilliant’s complete solution helps consumers use less energy and benefits the utility. Customers have provided positive feedback.
The Obama administration has long been a supporter of smart grid technology. Congress has caught on also with the House version of the economic stimulus package including language that would steer $32 billion towards upgrading the nation’s transmission infrastructure. Of that amount, $4.5 billion has been directed specifically for smart grid programs including grants for both utilities and their customers.
“With President Obama putting so much focus on the growth of the Smart Grid we expect the number of devices managing load and feeding information back to utilities to skyrocket in the coming years,” added Vogel. "All of this bodes well for the consumer who wishes to better manage their energy consumption and reduce the environmental impact of that usage."
Since the company was founded in 1985, Trilliant has consistently been innovating how energy is delivered and managed. Today it provides smart grid hardware, software, and service solutions for utilities and their customers.
Utilities realise much more efficient operations from Trilliant products and consumers are able to use less electricity and save on their monthly bills. The environment also benefits from less carbon emissions and the integration of distributed renewable resources into the power grid.
