Warsaw, Indiana, electricity co-op Kosciusko REMC has selected Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream RF advanced metering solution for its smart grid infrastructure project scheduled to start in early 2012. The utility reports it plans to deploy Gridstream RF mesh network technology, E350 FOCUS AX-SD residential meters and E650 S4e commercial meters to all of its members. The deployment is scheduled to begin in early 2012 and is expected to be completed in 18 months.
Kosciusko REMC chief executive officer Steve Rhodes notes, “When it comes to preparing for current and future initiatives, we like to be on the leading edge with a proven technology. Gridstream will provide access to information and the ability to remotely manage our distribution system in ways that will help us enhance customer service, lower costs and improve overall efficiency.”
Once the meter and network installation is complete, Kosciusko REMC members will access metering data through an online portal. In addition, the residential meters Kosciusko REMC is installing include integrated remote service switches and ZigBee communications for home area network applications. The utility also plans to test smart thermostats and other in-home devices with interested members.
Dave Connaker, Landis+Gyr Vice President of Sales, explains, “Kosciusko REMC wanted a future-ready platform for smart grid management engineered to accommodate their changing needs over time. In addition to providing two-way communications with a wide range of metering and distribution devices, Gridstream applications deliver proven benefits for utility customer service and operations departments, along with the built-in ability to add new technology as it becomes available. We look forward to working with the staff at Kosciusko REMC to realize their smart grid objectives.”
