A new study by E.ON on energy usage in the UK reveals who is most likely to be a power hog. The research found that one in five households keep their homes at balmy temperatures and that 25 to 34 year-olds are four times more likely keep temperatures at 27ºC (80oF) or above than adults 45 to 54 years old.

Regionally, E.ON says the Scots seek the most household heat, with nearly a quarter of respondents admitting they keep their living rooms at 23ºC (73oF) or hotter, compared to only 13 percent of respondents in the South West of England.

In the energy equivalent of fighting over the channel changer, the study reveals there are arguments over the thermostat, which the research calls the thermo-spat, in over half of all households. Twenty-three percent of men admit they bicker with their partners/wives over demands to turn the heating up.

The research also found that 53 percent of all households leave lights or heating on for their pets when they are not home. Four out of ten Brits drink a cup of tea or coffee to keep warm instead turning up the thermostat. IN an interesting finding two percent of respondents wear only underwear in their homes.

Kev Bryant, E.ON’s Energy Fitness Instructor observes, “When we feel the cold, it’s very tempting to reach for the thermostat, but there are other simple solutions which can make a big difference and help you keep your home energy fit. Whilst we’re not suggesting you put a second jumper on, it clearly makes good sense to wear more than just your underwear or even shorts and a t-shirt. And by taking a long-term approach to making your home more energy efficient, you’ll not only make savings today, you’ll also make savings on your energy bills in the years to come.”

Consumers can take E.ON’s Energy Fit Survey at http://eonenergyfit.com and receive tailored recommendations on the changes they can make to start saving energy—like installing wall and attic insulation and double glazed windows—as well as setting goals to save energy over time.
