Southern California Edison (SCE) has opened an exhibit in Irwindale, California displaying the latest tools and technologies that are helping to create the smart grid. The Smart Energy Experience introduces consumers to the progress SCE is making in developing new energy efficient technologies as well as demonstrating new energy efficient devices, smart appliances for a home area network, the next generation of plug-in electric vehicles, and Internet tools that enable customers to monitor and manage their energy costs.
Edison International chairman and chief executive officer Theodore F. Craver Jr. says, “The Smart Energy Experience is a valuable educational resource for customers. Edison is an industry leader in developing advanced technologies, promoting electric transportation readiness and in providing power generated from renewable resources. With our 125-year history of innovation, we are committed to providing customers with safe, reliable and affordable electricity.”
Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.), who represents the district in which the Smart Energy Experience is located, observes, “This exhibit demonstrates how new technology will help families keep their energy costs low. The green economy is the future and I’m proud area businesses like Southern California Edison are leading the nation’s investment in it.”
The Smart Energy Experience demonstrates smart grid technologies that have been researched and developed by SCE, which will improve the reliability of the electric grid. Animation of a neighborhood electric circuit visually depicts a power outage, showing how smart grid technology will reduce the length and number of customers affected by power outages in the future.
Other demonstrations at the center show how various components of smart grid technology will empower consumers to better manage their energy use and help reduce their carbon footprint through the use of smart energy devices, plug-in electric vehicles and distributed energy resources at customers’ premises.
SCE President John R. Fielder adds, “The Smart Energy Experience is a hands-on exhibit that will enable our customers to learn about the new tools and technologies that we are developing and introducing. We look forward to providing our customers with additional information and knowledge that will enable them to make choices that will help them save energy, money and the environment.”
Tours of the Smart Energy Experience are available to the public. Send an e-mail to CTACSCHE@sce.com or call (626) 812-7316 to schedule a visit.
