Tendril announced on October 21 that it had successfully integrated its Tendril Residential Energy Ecosystem (TREE) with the Itron OpenWay smart meter infrastructure. Tendril is a leading provider of Residential Energy Management Systems (REMS) for the utilities industry. As a result of its partnership with Itron, Tendril has utilized an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) network to enable two-way communications in real-time into the home through a home-area network (HAN).
Power providers looking for a proven solution now have to look no further than the TREE system to provide reliable and secure two-way communications over their AMI network. As demonstrated with Itron’s OpenWay system, Tendril has seamlessly integrated with utility infrastructure from power supplier to power consumer directly through the smart meter. This connection allows utilities to provide innovative demand response, energy efficiency, and variable pricing programs that focus on the consumer and their specific needs.
“This collaboration is a big step on the nationwide path to energy efficiency,” said Tendril CEO Adrian Tuck. “It’s one thing to turn down a thermostat but quite another to enable a true two-way conversation between utility and consumer. That’s where the benefits of AMI accrue and energy efficiency becomes a reality.”
The HAN created by the convergence of Itron and Tendril technology complies with the ZigBee Smart Energy application profile to wirelessly connect the smart meter to other components in the home including visual displays, smart thermostats, and load controls. The HAN creates an interactive network in the home without a broadband connection.
“With this announcement we continue to realise the promise of OpenWay,” said Itron director of AMI business development Ed May. “By combining OpenWay with the two-way communications provided by Tendril, we are helping usher in a new generation of truly interactive, consumer-centric solutions that enhance the utility investment in AMI by providing value-added services such as demand response, time-of-use billing and the ability for the consumer to opt in or out of utility sponsored programs.”
Tendril’s REMS allows utility companies to become compliant with the most stringent energy efficiency requirements that will undoubtedly become reality in the near future. Utility companies are able to improve operational efficiency by developing innovative programs that will help them shape load on the power grid.
Tendril focuses on creating a truly efficient power grid in the 21st century by creating a communications like between power providers and their customers for the first time. The Tendril Residential Energy Ecosystem (TREE) creates that communication link by seamlessly connecting smart meters and appliances to directly to the utility company. Based upon an open, standards-based architecture TREE will allow tomorrow’s innovations to be integrated in a system deployed today.
