GE Introduces New Battery for Utilities

GE Energy Storage Technologies has unveiled its new Durathon battery technology for utility companies. Thanks to its proprietary chemistry, the Durathon battery has the ability to last up to two decades while providing optimal charge and discharge times. As part of a simple energy storage system, GE’s Durathon battery provides an alternative to costly new power structures, which enables energy to be utilized when it’s needed.

Marvell Endorses H.R. 5070

Marvell Technology Group is publicly supporting United States Congressman Michael Honda’s efforts to make the consumer electronics (CE) industry greener through the H.R. 5070, The Smart Electronics Act. Introduced before Congress on April 20, the Act would assess the potential of smart electronics to reduce home and office electricity demand and to incorporate smart electronics into the Energy Star Program. The proposed legislation also addresses the impact of greenhouse gas and energy costs resulting from the proliferation of CE devices throughout the world.

Finland Shows off Its CleanTech Expertise

While much of the world continues to struggle with the deployment of smart meters, several companies in Finland have already implemented smart grid technologies. Cleantech Finland, a collective of top 100 Finnish cleantech companies that specialize in energy-efficiency, clean industrial processes and bioenergy, and the Cluster for Energy and Environment consortium (CLEEN) will demonstrate their smart grid technology ecosystem at this week’s Nordic Green II conference in Palo Alto on April 27-28.

GE Opens Smart Grid Center in Atlanta

GE’s Digital Energy has opened a new Smart Grid Technology Center of Excellence (COE) in Atlanta, Georgia, the company announced today. The center is expected to provide about 400 new jobs over three years and will combine the world headquarters for GE’s Digital Energy business, a smart grid engineering laboratory, and a world-destination smart grid customer solutions showcase.

GridWise Alliance, IEEE PES enter into agreement

The technology-neutral smart grid coalition GridWise Alliance and and IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES), a top provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy, have signed an agreement that enables the two organizations to collaborate on smart grid-related issues. The news was announced during the Smart Grid Day, held in conjunction with the IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.

ECF proposes path for 80 percent GHG reduction by 2050

A recently released study by the European Climate Foundation (ECF) shows how the EU can achieve an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050. The report determined that decarbonization of the energy sector is vital to achieving such an ambitious goal. Decarbonizing the energy sector would in turn have “knock-on effects” in both road transport and buildings.
