Bloomberg reports that Lockheed Martin is marketing its military and intelligence technology to electric utilities to protect the United States’ power grids from terrorists and hackers. With an estimated value of $1.3 billion, cybersecurity is currently a growth industry. Lockheed plans to become a major player next month via Palisade, a software program developed in partnership with American Electric Power Co. of Columbus, Ohio, which alerts power companies to hacker intrusions and attacks on their electronic systems.
Accenture has named Paul Daugherty chief technology architect and Gavin Michael chief technology innovation officer. Both executives will report to Kevin Campbell, group chief executive of Technology. The appointments become effective July 1.
The City of Brasov, Romania, will deploy over the next three years Echelon energy control technology for smart, networked street lighting systems citywide, Echelon announced today. The decision follows the city’s yearlong test of the technology in a neighbourhood that led to the city saving 28% on its energy bills and 40% on maintenance costs. Brasov also achieved more control over its streetlights and gained the ability to efficiently distribute power to other applications on the grid.
Expanded SandC Europe Services Team Offers Solutions for Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Integration
S&C Electric Company, a global leader in smart grids and renewable energy integration, today announced an expansion of its UK-based Power Systems Services operation. Three new engineers have joined S&C’s European team, bringing with them a combined 50 years worth of experience in utility transmission and distribution systems, smart grids, and renewable energy integration. This latest expansion continues the growth of S&C’s European support operations, which accelerated with the formation of S&C Europe LLC in 2008.
The new engineers will perform analytical studies to understand power delivery issues ranging from reliability problems to renewable energy interconnection issues. S&C’s Power Systems Services team will then apply these findings to deliver detailed, comprehensive recommendations designed to improve the reliability, stability, and efficiency of the power system.

GE is collaborating with Sensus to manufacture and deliver commercial and industrial (C&I) electricity metering technology. The new device, which will be marketed as the Sensus iCON APX FlexNet C&I meter, will be built on GE’s kV2c C&I meter platform and integrated with the Sensus FlexNet radio.
