Sponsored by EMC Corporation, the Data Hero Awards honor individuals and organizations who are that explore innovative uses of big data technologies and techniques. Winners and finalists were announced at EMC World in Las Vegas.
Jonathan Schwartz, a highly regarded global technology executive, innovator, and entrepreneur, has joined the Silver Spring Networks Board of Directors. Schwartz is currently the Chief Executive Officer of PictureOfHealth.com and serves on the Board of Directors of Taleo Corporation. Prior to founding PictureOfHealth, Schwartz was the President, Chief Executive, and a Director of Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle in 2010. Schwartz began his career with McKinsey & Company and holds degrees in Mathematics and Economics from Wesleyan University.
The Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), a unit of American Electric Power (AEP) announced it will deploy Silver Spring’s smart grid solutions. The deal follows the deployment of Silver Spring’s IP-based Smart Energy Platform at two of AEP other operating companies, AEP Ohio and Indiana Michigan Power. Those deployments were part of AEP’s gridSMART initiative.
Silver Spring Networks has launched a curriculum-based program, A Smart Energy Future, which it describes as “one of the first global educational programs designed to increase the general public’s understanding of smart energy and help prepare the next generation for the benefits of the smart grid.”
Silver Spring Networks has agreed to provide its smart grid platform and related software and services to Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) which recently received approved for its Smart Grid Initiative. Silver Spring will be BGE’s prime contractor for networking technology, smart meters, gas modules, and related solutions
Silver Spring Networks has announced a multi-year contract extension with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), the largest electric utility in Florida. Under the terms of the agreement, Silver Spring continues to manage FPL’s AMI Smart Grid platform using UtilityIQ (UIQ), the software application that delivers control over a utility’s AMI Smart Grid deployment, including remote monitoring and configuration.
The Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC) announced the addition of nine new affiliate members including the Future of Privacy Forum, the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel, the Demand Response Smart Grid Coalition, the Texas Office of Public Counsel, and the United Consumer Advocacy Network.
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the City of San Jose and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) have partnered to establish the Silicon Valley Smart Grid Task Force. The purpose of the task force is for representatives from industry, the public sector, non-profits and academia to collaborate on California’s energy efficiency efforts and the rollout of Smart Grid technology.

The United States has invested nearly $4 billion in federal stimulus money in support of smart grid deployment. The vision for a smart grid is an efficient power supply network that aids development of renewable energy, the introduction of “smart” appliances that support for electric cars.
Smart Grid solutions provider Silver Spring and ClipperCreek, Inc., which produces plug-in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, have announced the joint development of the first fully integrated, Level 2 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) smart charging station.
