NCSU takes leading role in developing Smart Grid

The electronic contraption, only in its first generation, was named this year by experts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as one of the 10 most important technology innovations of 2010. MIT ranked the “smart transformer,” created by the FREEDM Systems Centre in Raleigh, alongside recent advances in cancer genomics and synthetic cells.

Echelon Appoints New Product Vice President

Echelon Corporation has announced the appointment of product strategist Varun Nagaraj to the position of senior vice president of product management and product marketing. With 20 years of product planning and strategy expertise, Nagaraj will be responsible for Echelon’s product planning, strategy and outbound communications and is expected to drive the evolution of Echelon’s Energy Control Networking solutions.

ABB Supports Smart Grid

Power and automation technology group ABB is investing $10 million to expand its Raleigh, North Carolina, facility to include a technology center called the Smart Grid Center of Excellence (COE). ABB will temporarily locate the Smart Grid COE in its existing Centennial Campus facilities at North Carolina State University in Raleigh until it can build and lease out space on the Centennial Campus for a permanent facility. The site is already home to the North America headquarters of ABB’s Power Products and Power Systems divisions as well as one of eight global corporate research centers that is focused on advanced power system technology.
