Purdue and Ivy Tech Community College have received $4.7 million in federal funding, which was matched by non-federal sources, to update and develop education and training programs related to electric vehicles and a smart power grid capable of handling the demands posed by thousands of charging electric vehicles.
ABB has been commissioned by the CenterPoint Energy Service Company for the latest Service Suite mobile workforce management (MWFM) software from Ventyx and for the FocalPoint business intelligence solution from Obvient, both companies being recent ABB acquisitions.
Power and automation technology group ABB is investing $10 million to expand its Raleigh, North Carolina, facility to include a technology center called the Smart Grid Center of Excellence (COE). ABB will temporarily locate the Smart Grid COE in its existing Centennial Campus facilities at North Carolina State University in Raleigh until it can build and lease out space on the Centennial Campus for a permanent facility. The site is already home to the North America headquarters of ABB’s Power Products and Power Systems divisions as well as one of eight global corporate research centers that is focused on advanced power system technology.
Petra Solar has appointed John S. Rego chief financial officer and treasurer. As CFO, Rego will be responsible for the company’s accounting, finance, treasury, taxation, human resources, public relations, and information technology. Rego has more than 25 years of executive leadership experience in building technology companies. Prior to joining Petra, Rego spent seven years with Vonage Holdings Corp. as executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer and was responsible for raising over $1.3 billion in capital.
Remote Energy Monitoring Ltd (REM) and Infotech Enterprises Ltd have unveiled a new interface between SAP’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and REM’s Smart Meter Operations Suite (SMOS). The announcement came during the Centre of Excellence opening in Holborn, London.
Information technology (IT) company Telvent has entered into a partnership with Larsen and Toubro Ltd. to implement a smart grid project for Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. Telvent will supply baseline data and IT applications for energy accounting, auditing and IT-based consumer service centers for 95 towns in India. The project is an opportunity for Telvent and Larsen and Toubro to deploy state-of-the-art toolsets for utilities to take an active role in the rapidly emerging smart grid systems.
Information technology company Telvent has been selected by Abengoa Solar to implement the complete centralize control system for the Seville, Spain-based Helioenergy I and II solar energy plants. The plants have a surface capture mirrors area of 3.24 million square feet and each plant is capable of generating enough clean energy to supply 25,700 homes. It is estimated the plants will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 31,400 tons every year.
