PowerDash has selected Digi International’s ConnectPort X2 Smart Energy wireless gateway and iDigi Device Cloud to connect its energy performance monitoring solutions to Smart Energy devices for residential solar installations. In addition, it is using the ConnectPort X4 for commercial and industrial solar power installations to connect a broad range of production, metering, and sensing equipment.
Chip maker Marvell has acquired the intellectual property and assets of Diseno de Sistemas en Silicio S.A. (DS2) which supplies high speed semiconductor solutions for powerline communications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. An increasing number of homes today are using multiple networks – including simultaneous wired and wireless networks – to support a variety of services. This trend is driving the need for greater bandwidth in the home. Powerline technology converts existing electrical power wiring into a smart, high-speed network, enabling consumers to create an economical “connected home” that can stream virtually any personal or subscription-based digital content to and from any room at high speeds.
The power network and communications technologies are at the heart of utility smart grid deployments but there has been vigorous debate over which will play the primary role.
A new report from Pike Research, “Smart Grid Networking and Communications”, examines the global market opportunity for communication technologies in all areas of smart grid operations, from the utility substation to the home area network.
