University Offers Course on Smart Grids

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is offering the second iteration of its Applied Smart Grids course, designed to cross-skill Information Communications Technology (ICT), telecommunications, and energy engineers.

Australia Approves Commercial Scale Smart Grid

Earlier this month, the Australian government approved the country’s first commercial-scale smart grid project in an effort to help Australians to save power and connect domestic renewable energy to the grid. The Smart Grid, Smart City demonstration project will commence later this year in Newcastle and parts of Sydney, running until 2013. The cost of the project is estimated to be £46.3 million.

EnergyAustralia rules out commercial WiMAX interests

Despite EnergyAustralia’s growing fiber and WiMAX-based infrastructure in New South Wales, the energy retailer has opted against becoming a retail service provider (RSP) under the National Broadband Network (NBN). EnergyAustralia has established a wide-ranging network consisting of 800km of fiber infrastructure, and is in the process of deploying 140 WiMAX base towers around the state to transmit electricity usage information from smart meters to data collection units and mobile field devices. As part of its winning bid for the
