S&C Electric Company has introduced a turnkey energy storage project that will enable Southern California Edison (SCE) reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The new technology is the result of a contract SCE awarded S&C to furnish a Storage Management System (SMS) on Catalina Island, which is located off the coast of Southern California. The Smart Grid SMS is a fast-responding automatic controller that uses built-in intelligence to control charging and discharging of sodium-sulfur batteries.
Beacon Power Corporation has signed a lease agreement with NorthWestern Energy for a one-megawatt Beacon Smart Energy Matrix flywheel energy storage system. The solution will be operated in conjunction with Mill Creek Generating Station (MCGS), a gas-fired regulating reserve plant recently commissioned in Montana that is owned by NorthWestern Energy. The system is expected to be operational by the end of 2011.
Renewable technology company Silent Power will supply the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) with distributed energy storage technology for the utility’s photovoltaic (PV) storage pilot at Anatolia. The utility’s $5.9 million pilot project will assess how the integration of energy storage by reducing peak demand loads, firming intermittent renewable capacity and maximizing overall system efficiency enhances the value of distributed PV resources for the community, the utility and the grid
