Vancouver start-up Empower Software has been named a finalist in the Quest for Canada’s Greenest IT award for their portable energy management software for the smart grid. Empower’s SmartHome allows consumers to monitor their home energy consumption in real time without the need of an additional in home display. Empower’s demand response applications have shown to reduce power consumption up to 20 percent when consumers use a PC or a smart phone to view usage.
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and its research partners, including start-up Akuacom, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Southern California Edison, have developed an open-source communications specification, OpenADR, which provides a common “language” for technology developed for the Smart Grid.
RSA, The Security Division of EMC, has agreed provide enhanced security for Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream smart grid network. The strategic partnership between the two companies brings together Landis+Gyr’s expertise in advanced metering infrastructure and applications, and RSA’s track record in security and information risk management, allowing Landis+Gyr to enhance security features already present in Gridstream. Building security directly into the smart grid ecosystem from its inception enables companies to address potential vulnerabilities and risks to the system.
Honeywell has acquired Akuacom, a provider of automated demand response technology and services for the smart grid. The deal bolsters Honeywell’s energy management and smart grid portfolio. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Smart Grid solutions provider Silver Spring and ClipperCreek, Inc., which produces plug-in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, have announced the joint development of the first fully integrated, Level 2 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) smart charging station.
Comverge, Inc has renewed their contract with NV Energy to continue managing the 143 megawatt smart grid-ready demand response program, the industry’s largest. Comverge will also provide its SuperStat programmable communicating thermostats. The two longstanding partners may also explore additional demand response technologies to support their Advanced Service Delivery (ASD) roll-out.
Mexico’s state power company, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), has successfully integrated Elster’s EnergyAxis Management System with CFE’s customer information and billing systems. According to Elster, the two-way integration allows CFE “to automate its data collection process, detect non-technical losses, improve customer service and execute remote disconnections more quickly and cost effectively.” Elster is the first AMI provider to receive a Certificate of Compliance from CFE.
Demand Response provider Energate has formed a strategic partnership with Smart Grid solutions provider Silver Spring Networks to offer a complete Demand Response solution to utilities.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities has approved NSTAR’s Smart Grid pilot program, which will begin enrolling consumers interested in tracking their energy consumption within the next couple of months. Tendril will work with NSTAR to leverage its existing automated meter reading (AMR) infrastructure to offer near-time energy information and management.
