Brazil’s second largest water utility, Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais (COPASA), announced it will install an additional 63,000 Elster water meters as part of its current deployment with Elster Medicao de Agua. COPASA will deploy a combination of glass and plastic cover S120 water meters. The deployment is scheduled to begin in July 2011 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
A new report by the Northeast Group has determined that South America’s smart meter market will reach 104.5 million meters and $25.1 billion by 2020. The study, Smart Grid Market Forecast (2011-2020), projects other smart grid technologies including distribution automation will also grow quickly. Brazil is poised to be first to initiate large-scale deployments, followed by Chile and Argentina.

The largest country in South America is preparing to becoming the “smartest” as well. General Electric (GE), Trilliant and AES Eletropaulo are collaborating in a smart grid research and development project that will ultimately bring the benefits of smart meters to Sao Paulo. The end goal is to use Sao Paulo as the foundation for establishing a more reliable and efficient energy infrastructure throughout the entire county.
