This is not your father’s doorbell. Ring is more door butler than simple smart appliance. The user-friendly device includes a wide-angle camera, speaker, microphone, motion sensor and a button that triggers your home’s doorbell chime.
When a visitor or delivery person approaches your home, Ring sends an alert to your smartphone that there is someone nearing your doorstep. At that point, you can launch the app and see in real time what’s happening and if you choose, carry on a conversation with your visitor. And each visit is recorded. Since Ring works off a motion detector just the actual visits gets recorded.
Ring’s selling point is the ability to see whoever is at your door whether you are at work or on vacation on the other side of the country. You can verify the post office or UPS has delivered a package, or identify the neighborhood thief nicking your morning newspaper. There is also a cloud service option that enables you to keep a record of each video created by Ring so you can play them back at your convenience.
Ring is designed so that the homeowner can install the device on their own without having to call in an electrician and comes with instruction videos. You can either hardwire it to your home or run it off of batteries.
