Schneider Electric Opens Smart Cities Center of Excellence

Schneider Electric has announced plans for a Center of Excellence in Barcelona, Spain, that will focus on smart solutions for cities.

Schneider Electric’s Center of Excellence will offer smart solutions to cities that will have positive economic and social impact; help with the implementation of smart solutions and the development of new business models; and support cities transitioning to efficient management, habitability, and sustainability.

Julio Rodríguez, Schneider Electric’s executive vice-president of global operations explains, “In the next 40 years we are going to experience an urban technological revolution. The ongoing concentration of the population towards urban cores and the growing shortage of resources will have important repercussions on mobility, air quality, healthcare service, etc. Today Schneider Electric is working with more than 200 cities in smart management projects. With this Center of Excellence we are enhancing our capacity to provide advanced solutions to the cities.”

Schneider Electric will locate its Center of Excellence in the Smart City Campus planned by the Barcelona city council. Cisco has also announced a research center investment. The research center is expected to be operational by mid-2016.

Mayor of Barcelona Xavier Trias adds: “Barcelona has become a worldwide reference in the field of intelligent city. It is the Mobile World Capital and in 2014 Barcelona has been honored as European Capital of Innovation. The new Center of Innovation located in the Smart City Campus and the common agreement of Schneider Electric and Cisco with our city, will help us to strengthen the bet of a new economic growth model based on technology, urban innovation and services, improving well-being and people’s quality of life.”

Smart City solutions are becoming ever more important as cities across the globe become more population dense, straining resources. Schneider Electric also indicates its intention to collaborate with some universities such as IESE Business School (University of Navarra), where Schneider Electric has established a Chair devoted to sustainability and business strategy.
