PG&E is Largest Solar Utility in the US

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) recently connected the 150,000th solar customer to its electric grid. In 2014, the California utility connected more than 45,000 new rooftop solar customers and added approximately 326 MW of installed solar power, generating enough energy to service more than 70,000 homes. This year PG&E connecting approximately four thousand new solar customers every month, more than any other energy company in the United States.

PG&E’s senior vice president and chief customer officer Laurie Giammona notes, “Every month, thousands of PG&E customers are choosing to go solar to help them save on their bill and to reduce their carbon footprint. Solar power is critical to California’s clean energy future and we are 100 percent committed to getting even more customers connected with solar in 2015.”

To facilitate the process of going solar, PG&E has reduced the average application processing time for new solar connections to five days. The industry average is four weeks. PG&E also offers a solar calculator to help customers estimate the appropriate solar system size for circumstances, the likely cost, and how much energy it will help them save.

Later this year PG&E will offer the green option, a program that will enable customers to buy into a pool of clean solar energy, locally produced in PG&E’s service area that will provide up to 100 percent solar power for a modest cost premium each month.

PG&E is one of the largest combined natural gas and electric utilities in the United States, serving nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California.

In other energy-saving news, SaaS provider Bidgely reports that a recent study found that some of the 850 participants of a PG&E customer pilot group reduce energy consumption by almost 8 percent by using Stream My Data, Bidgely’s real-time energy monitoring service.

Bidgely founder and chief executive officer Abhay Gupta adds: “Our energy monitoring service is essential in helping people take steps to save energy and meet their usage goals. The savings and satisfaction experienced by PG&E customers is a strong validation of our strategy and focus on creating a great user experience.”
