About Smartmeters

About SmartmetersNow that the world is coming together in the fight against climate change, world governments are pushing corporations to develop smart meter technology as the first major step in reducing carbon emissions that cause global warming. Smart meters give energy consumers the ability to better manage their individual power consumption. It is the management of energy consumption by individuals that will bring one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in the world under control. Welcome to smartmeters.com the Web's premier source for news, product reviews, and events all having to do with the realm of smart meters. Only at smartmeters.com can you find all of this information at one place. We are constantly searching the Internet for the latest press releases regarding smart meter technology and regrouping that information here in a convenient format.

Nokia has unveiled a new “smart home” platform that utilises both the ZigBee and the Z-Wave protocols for wireless transmissions.  Using a specially configured WiFi gateway, the whole home can be managed through a mobile phone.  Soon, Nokia will integrate smart meter management within the system also.

Called the Home Control Centre, the system has been described as an open platform that brings together closed-circuit television, mobile devices, and wireless communications in a way that is accessible both inside and outside of the home over the Internet.  At first, the integrated devices will focus on managing heat within the home.

While the repercussions of the credit crunch continue to be felt in the economy, some are saying that environmental issues should be placed on the backburner.  However, as Lord Stern stated in his 2006 report on the economics of Climate Change, we are dangerously close to the gpoint of no returnh where no matter what corrective action is taken irreversible damage will have been inflicted on the environment.

If Europe is to meet its 2020 goals to both increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases by 20 percent and increase the amount of renewable energy to 20 percent of the total energy supply than tough decisions will have to be made.  The UK has set an even more ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050.
