The UK’s government has proposed the essential role-out of smart meters for every home to take place in the UK by 2020. There has never been a project in the UK involving so much two way digital data. This data needs to be stored, analysed, regulated and secured effectively and this is where data management programmes need to be thoroughly considered and analysed before implementation. Utility companies are looking for inovative ways to manage their data whether this be through building their own in house systems or by out sourcing to expert companies. However, regardless of the method, this is an enormous challenge that needs to be addressed by the industry, government and technology providers in order for the transition to the smart energy network to be successful.
