eMeter honored CenterPoint Energy for reaching the one million smart meter installation milestone. CenterPoint Energy’s smart meter deployment is an integral part of its Energy InSight program, a system of integrated smart technologies that give consumers more control over their energy consumption as well as improving electric reliability and power restoration.
Kenny Mercado, division senior president of regulated operations technology at CenterPoint Energy says the company’s smart grid vision “is to give more than two million Houston-area households the tools to use energy more efficiently while we eliminate hundreds of thousands of truck rolls and harness Smart Grid insights to more effectively manage power outages. It is flattering that eMeter has recognized us for our efforts in achieving this milestone, which will allow us to better serve our customers.”
The eMeter EnergyIP platform supports more than one million meters that capture and share energy usage data at 15 minute intervals. All together, more than 100 million data elements are managed each day by CenterPoint Energy using the EnergyIP platform, enabling retail electric providers (REPs) to offer time-of-use pricing, pre-paid service, and energy analysis tools. EnergyIP also facilitates the remote reading, connection and disconnection of electric meters leading to faster transactions and reductions in thousands of technician field visits on a daily basis.
CenterPoint Energy was originally scheduled to complete the installation of more than two million smart meters system-wide by early 2014. With the help of a Smart Grid Investment Grant from the Department of Energy, CenterPoint Energy now expects to complete the installation in mid-2012.
eMeter chief executive officer Gary Bloom, says, “CenterPoint Energy is establishing a strong model for how energy companies can roll out a Smart Grid in large American cities. They are a very deserving winner of the 2011 eMeter Million Meter Milestone Award.”
