Who are REM and what makes them smarter than the rest?
Remote Energy Monitoring, an innovative British company who are involved in the design, development and deployment of a complete end to end SMART metering solution, have just been awarded official certification from Ofgem for their multimode smart meter. This is no mean feat….
To gain certification from Ofgem, the regulatory body in the UK for all gas and electricity customers, meters have to go through a variety of rigorous tests to prove their durability and accuracy. Testing will involve setting them on fire, freezing them, exposing them to electricity surges, disconnections and tampering All these scenarios are to help ensure that the meters are of a high enough standard for utilities to roll out to domestic customers. This may sound like overkill but these are all scenarios that meters are regularly subjected to. REM’s chairman, John Roberts, has encountered many of these in his former role of CEO of United Utilities – and so brings unrivalled experience to the company.
What makes REM and their metering solutions unique is that they are the only Ofgem certified company which will provide constant two way communications. This enables utility companies to get an instant reading and adjust the consumers’ payment terms when necessary. The utility provider can switch the meter remotely between a credit or prepayment meter. This will allow utilities to fulfil their social responsibility more effectively by helping customers to manage their energy bills and consumption to avoid excessive energy debts. .
REM’s meter also comes with a uniquely developed software data management system which allows the energy supplier access to useable data to increase customer retention, improve operational efficiency and develop brand reach whilst reducing customer churn and bad debt.
In October last year, the UK government announced its plan to mandate smart energy meters for all UK homes. The majority of smart meters that are currently available in the marketplace are aimed solely at the Industrial and Commercial sector; REM, by contrast, has positioned their business to provide metering solutions for the domestic energy user. With the government mandate dictating the roll out of smart meters in all UK homes to start next year, this market is substantial. In the region of 20 million meters are to be replaced by smart meters over the next 10 years. John Roberts, REM’s chairman commented: ‘The mandate for all UK homes to have smart meters makes this a major and timely milestone for us’
Remote Energy Monitoring was founded in 2007 in partnership with Climate Change Capital, a leading investment banking group specialising in the low carbon economy, to provide Energy Information Intelligence to both consumers and suppliers.
