Calico Energy Services has become an ENERGY STAR partner. Through its voluntary partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Program, Calico will work with utilities and building managers to improve the energy efficiency of large commercial properties.
Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) has announced it is implementing a smart grid throughout its Central Maryland service territory. BGE’s acknowledges that its ability to invest hundreds of millions of dollars on a smart grid is dependent on being able to recoup the costs. To that end the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) found that the public interest is served by a decision to move forward with this initiative.
Ford, Detroit Edison, and Xtreme Power are partnering to convert the carmaker’s Michigan Assembly plant into one of the state’s largest solar power generation systems and electric vehicle charging stations. The combined systems are expected to give Michigan Assembly the largest solar power array in Michigan and save an estimated $160,000 per year in energy costs. Installation of the system begins later this year.
Cluj-Napoca City has selected IT solutions provider Telvent to install the first distribution management system DMS for a medium voltage network in Romania. Telvent will partner with its Romanian associate, EnergoBit, to complete the project which comprises more than 60 transformer substations with Saitel smart remote terminal units SRTU. By integrating the DMS and SRTU technology, Cluj-Napoca City creates a smarter grid while increasing efficiency, reducing operational costs, and improving consumer satisfaction.
Dynegy Inc. announced it will be acquired by an affiliate of The Blackstone Group L.P. The deal is valued at approximately $4.7 billion, which includes the assumption of existing debt. Under the terms of the merger agreement, Dynegy stockholders will receive $4.50 in cash for each outstanding share of Dynegy common stock they own.
Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has selected eMeter’s EnergyIP information platform and customer Web portal for use in its upcoming Smart Grid pilot program. ITRI, a research organization mandated to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Taiwan, says Energy IP was chosen for its reliability and scalability, and proven success in the market.
Dr Peter Harrop, the Chairman of IDTechEx says hospitals, manufacturers, and others are embracing the second generation of radio-frequency identification – Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) – because the technology has interrogators that sense location in 3D without having to be in close physical proximity.
SmartSynch has been selected by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) to supply its IP-enabled SmartMeters and in-home energy management solutions for a three year smart grid demonstration project launched earlier in 2010. The trial will extend smart grid benefits to 1,000 participating households. The demonstration is the first step in a planned wide-scale deployment for more than 430,000 customers.
Canadian Solar Inc. has announced that Guelph will be the location for its first module facility in North America. The facility is expected to create up to 500 jobs. This announcement comes on the heels of an earlier report that Siemens and Samsung are partnering to build a wind turbine blade manufacturing plant in Ontario that will create up to 900 direct and indirect jobs.
